Yoshikazu EBISU in AMAGI MUSEUM 2012

Yoshikazu EBISU GOES FOR 2012.

In 2010, Ebisu’s work was featured at a special exhibition in Paris, France at the Vallois Gallery.   He was selected to represent Japan’s ever growing underground art scene with a group of other revered Japanese artists.  The Vallois Gallery has hosted many famous artists’ paintings, and it was a great honor for Ebisu to be invited to participate in this event.  During this month long showing, his art was reviewed very favorably and sold very well.

In 2011, his art returned from Paris to be prominently displayed in his home town of Nagasaki at the famous Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture (www.nmhc.jp).  More than fifty pieces of Ebisu’s work were used in the rare extended two month exhibition this summer, and during this time the entire city embraced his art and proudly displayed it on their tram painting and buildings.  Ebisu also continues to be warmly embraced by Japan’s entertainment world.

Yoshikazu Ebisu was born in 1947 in Nagasaki, Japan.  From a young age Ebisu dreamed of becoming an artist, but he felt he had few opportunities in his home town and moved to Tokyo.  Though he struggled to survive in Tokyo, eventually he was discovered by “Garo” magazine in 1973.  His debut comic “Pachinko” was extremely popular, and his career as an artist had truly begun.

Through the 80’s and 90’s Ebisu continued to work with many of Japan’s great cartoonists and manga artists.  He even became a television personality and was featured on many talk shows.

Even today Ebisu continues to expand as an artist by writing a collection of essays about his life experiences.  At first glance, Ebisu looks like nothing more than a simple man, but in truth he is an idiot savant.  Ebisu’s artwork had drawn favorable comparisons to American artists like Raymond Pettibone and Daniel Johnston.

Back to the original definition of HATTENBA at the beginning of Year.

Hattenba, cruising spaces or "boxes" are smaller mix rooms, video cubicles or clubs with minimal bathing facilities. It has become trendy for gay men to set these places up in apartments in the suburban areas, sometimes with sheets hung to create "rooms," with a VCR playing videos and ubiquitous Kleenex boxes scattered about. Hattenba will often have themed days (Mondays is for torn jock straps, Tuesdays is for Speedos, Wednesday is all-nude, etc.). These amateur clubs have become a popular addition to Japan's gay scene spectrum.

Saunas in Japan often function as over-night hotels when city trains stop after midnight. Expect night-long symphonies of snoring and moaning. When you enter, remove your shoes carefully (do NOT step on the carpet with your dirty shoes). Small coin lockers are provided in the entryway to store them. Remember the number of the coin locker as you may have to announce this in Japanese to get your key back when you leave (choose a number that you can easily remember). There is usually a ticket dispensing machine next to the attendant window. Give your ticket and the shoe locker key to the attendant who will trade both for a robe, washcloth and a separate key for your clothes locker (the locker number will be the same as your shoe locker). Private rooms are few and prohibitively expensive. Instead, park your things in the clothes locker and use a "mix room" for sleep and cruising. Saunas all feature large, clean bathing facilities (wash at the squat stools BEFORE going into the hot pool or steam room), a snack/TV/smoking room, video rooms, and multiple dimly lit mix rooms with futons, pillows, and coverlets. Robes are provided and almost universally worn (not so for condoms, so bring a supply of your own). You can either wander around, watching events unfold before your eyes, or lie down and wait for someone who fancies you to approach (please do not chase or pester Japanese who try to avoid you). Since privacy in this land of paper walls is inside one's own head, you will undoubtedly witness some mind-blowing tableaus.

Teruhiko YUMURA (Terry Johnson, King Terry)

Pakito Bolino (Le Dernier Cri) and Takashi Nemoto visited Teruhiko Yumura yesterday to pay their utmost respects to his achievement and himself.
Teruhiko Yumura gave his excited approval to Pakito's art activities as well as our Hattenba Production.

Teruhiko Yumura was one of the leading artists in the 1970s movement of "punk" mangas, which promoted lunacy and manic scribbles instead of artistic qualities. Yumura published his work under a ariety of pseudonyms, including Terry Johnson and King Terry, and appeared in the pages and on covers of magazines like Garo and Comic Cue. He created among others the manga 'Shogun Tofu', which also found its way to Raw magazine in 1984. Yumura is the "godfater" of the heta-uma drawing style, which means in translation "bad, but good".
